Abstract: Prandtl's boundary layer theory for incompressible flow is a milestone in science and mathematics. It gives birth to the branch of asymptotic analysis among others. However, the validity of it, even on a short time interval, is still an open problem. Here we present a necessary condition on the approximate solution to the Navier-Stokes equations constructed via the Prandtl recipe that guarantees the validity of the Prandtl theory. The condition is formulated in terms of appropriate bounds on the spectra of a linear operator generated by this approximate solution. It can be viewed as a stability requirement.
